Bee MC

Society of Sound presents Bee MC, an east London newcomer who delivers an eclectic album of considerable power.

Bee MC arrives on the scene with a blank slate; no pre conceptions, no baggage. His debut offering, ‘Cash is King’ is the result an incredibly eclectic musical ‘education’, combined with prodigious talent and a barely constrained appetite for creativity.

Bee MC grew up listening to everything and anything: “Anything on radio, music played in people’s cars or music played by family and friends.” And he says that “Life” introduced him to the Blues. The introduction obviously hit home, because a modern British take on the Blues is the closest you can get to describing this hard to categorise offering.

At times Led Zeppelin style riffing, in your face street-smarts poetry – think Gill Scott Heron combined with found-sound chatter from the east London streets he calls home there’s even a touch of country on the beautiful Goodnight Jonny, where he sounds like some inner-city Rainer Ptacek.

But most often, it is a hard-edged take on the classic Blues duo that comes to the fore, with a number of inspired guitar and drum combinations. Think T-Model Ford or (obviously from similar influences) The White Stripes. It’s on these tracks than co-conspirator Seb Rochford shows his worth, not only producing the album, but also providing percussion to perfectly complement Bee MC’s guitar and vocals.

The result is feisty, eclectic, and demanding of repeat listening.
