Oxford favourites Stornoway set off on their ‘The Farewell Tour’ in Spring 2017. After more than ten years playing together the band were ready for new horizons, and the planned dates were the perfect send off. The band played eleven shows across the UK, beginning in Gateshead on February 27th and ending with a hometown gig at Oxford’s New Theatre on March 12th.

Stornoway have released three studio albums, a surprise mini album and two EPs. Their most recent effort, 2015’s Bonxie, saw the band combine their two great passions, music and nature, to create a record indebted to the natural world and specifically, birds. Produced by Gil Norton of Foo Fighters and Pixies fame, the record saw Stornoway take a step out of their comfort zone, creating something bold and inherently beautiful. The record was a success, entering the UK Charts inside the Top 20. The touring cycle saw the band play two sold out shows at Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre, five years after they were the first pop band to play the venue.

Having initially formed in 2005, Stornoway have had an undoubtedly stellar career, full of landmark moments. In November 2009 they became the first unsigned band to appear on Later… With Jools Holland, performing alongside Sting, Jay – Z and Foo Fighters. In April 2010 they signed their record deal with taste making indie label 4AD and, in the town of Stornoway, they played a landmark gig on their first visit to the location that gave them their name. They went on to perform worldwide including appearances at the Barbican and on the main stage at Glastonbury, Latitude and Isle of Wight festivals.

“We have achieved far more as a band than we ever dared to dream back as students in a drafty east Oxford garage and we are immensely proud of the music we have created together.

We are eternally grateful to all our wonderful fans and friends who have given us so much support throughout our career.”

The Real World Studios mobile recording team were at the New Theatre in Oxford on 12 March 2017 to capture that final concert in front of a packed audience. It turned out to be more than just a live gig – it was an emotional, celebratory farewell party for everyone present.
