With the audio system for the BMW 5 Series, our singular goal was to produce a sound experience that feels as though you are there with the artist in the studio. From the outset, the engineering teams from BMW and Bowers & Wilkins joined forces to create an audio system featuring advanced acoustic technologies such as Diamond tweeters, which works in harmony with the car’s interior architecture to deliver an incredibly realistic, completely enveloping audio experience.
The properties of diamond are prized in highly specialised industrial applications, from neurosurgery to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Its unique stiffness-to-lightness ratio also makes diamond the perfect tweeter material. Developed for our flagship 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers, diamond tweeter domes are capable of frequencies far beyond the range of human hearing, resulting in superb clarity and detail.
The Diamond Surround Sound System also utilises advanced materials for midrange and bass drivers in the form of Kevlar™ and Rohacell™. This combination provides clear vocals, and rock solid bass no matter where the listener is sat in the car.
The tweeters in the BMW 5 Series also benefit from Nautilus spiral diffusers, a technology derived from Bowers & Wilkins iconic Nautilus loudspeaker. This innovative technology ensures that unwanted sound never reaches the ears of the listener.
The Diamond Surround Sound System is perfectly integrated into the cabin of the new BMW 5 Series – acoustically and aesthetically. Tuned by the people responsible for the 800 Series Diamond louspeakers, it utilises stainless steel speaker grilles, which have audio-ideal Fibonacci patterned holes that allow more sound to pass through whilst blending into the luxurious interior. Subtle illumination on the sail tweeters is designed to highlight the Diamond tweeter and the Nautilus spiral technology.
