FAQ

If you are having difficulty operating Zeppelin, or you are unsure about certain aspects, please look through these FAQ topics first to see if your issue is addressed.

The full Zeppelin Owner’s Manual is now only available online so that it can be easily updated in line with the rapidly changing iPod/iPhone market. It supersedes any manual that may have been supplied with the product and you can download it from the Zeppelin Support page.

There you can also download a Connectivity Guide that explains how to use Zeppelin with a wide variety of sources other than iPods or iPhones.

There are different hardware versions of Zeppelin, indicated by the first digit of the serial number, which you can find on the underside in the centre of the rubber base. In the manual and these FAQs, we refer to the different types as Z-0, Z-1 or Z-2, for example.

If you still feel operation is not as expected, try the following before contacting your retailer or national distributor:

1. Reset the iPod
2. Reset Zeppelin
3. Check in iTunes that your iPod/iPhone software is up to date
4. Check on the Zeppelin Support page that your Zeppelin software is up to date

1. How do I reset my iPod/iPhone?

Instructions on how to reset your iPod/iPhone may be found on the Apple web site. Search 'How to reset iPod' using your Internet browser. It is often possible to reset those iPods with clickwheels by pressing and holding the centre and menu buttons simultaneously for five to ten seconds.

2. How do I reset my Zeppelin?

Unplug the power cord, wait 5 seconds or so and then reconnect. It is not sufficient just to put Zeppelin in standby. This is not a 'factory reset', so your personal EQ settings will be retained.

3. How can I tell what software version is installed in my Zeppelin?

You can view the current version on the screen of the iPhone and most iPods. Navigation depends on the model and is explained in the Upgrading Zeppelin Software section of the online manual.

4. Why does Zeppelins volume behave inconsistently after updating my iPod touch to the latest Apple version 3.0 software?

This is a known issue, not unique to Zeppelin, that affects some, but not all 1st generation iPod touch models and only when running Apple firmware version 3.0. As far as we can ascertain, the touches affected have a Model Number that ends with the letters ZO, but this may not be exclusive. You can find this number by navigating Settings > General > About. When using the volume controls on Zeppelin or its remote handset while the touch is in Play mode, the volume can change in the opposite direction to that intended and in an inconsistent manner. In Pause mode, the controls may still function correctly.

We are currently working to resolve this issue.

5. Can I use an iPhone with versions of Zeppelin not marked Works with iPhone?

Zeppelins with serial number beginning Z-0 or Z-1 are not certified "Works with iPhone". They will play music from an iPhone, but when you dock it, it will display one of two messages.

If the iPhone is in airplane mode, the message is:
"This accessory is not made to work with iPhone. OK?"
Simply press OK and the iPhone will behave with full functionality as described in Zeppelins Owners Manual.

If the iPhone is in normal mode, the message is:
"This accessory is not made to work with iPhone. Would you like to turn on Airplane Mode to reduce audio interference (you will not be able to make or receive calls)? Yes/No"
We have taken care to make Zeppelin immune to interference, so press No and use the iPhone as normal.

If you have an incoming call, the iPhone will ring through Zeppelin and mute the music. To take the call, remove the iPhone from Zeppelin and replace it when the call is finished. The iPhone currently does not support phone operation while docked.

6. How do I get radio through my Zeppelin?

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, download one of the Internet radio applications such as WunderRadio or LastFM from the Apps Store. If your Zeppelin serial number starts with Z-0, you will have to manually enable streaming. This is explained in the Streaming content from the Internet section of the online manual.

For other iPods, there are hardware devices designed to plug between the iPod and the speaker, but some are known not to work with Zeppelin and we are unable to make a recommendation.

7. How can I wall mount my Zeppelin?

An optional wall mounting bracket may be purchased through an authorised B&W outlet.

8. My remote control does not operate.

If you are trying to use the remote control for the first time, check that the insulating film fitted between the battery and the contacts to prevent the battery draining has been removed. A clear plastic tab protruding from the battery cover indicates its presence. It may be necessary to remove the battery before the insulator can be removed.

If the remote control has been in use for some time, the battery may need replacing. Use a type CR2032 'coin' cell.

If you have just replaced the battery, check that you installed it the right way up. The lettering should be visible when fitted.

9. How do I replace the battery in the remote control?

With the battery cover removed, press down on the outer edge of the battery at the opposite side to the shiny metal retaining clip. The battery should pop up. When replacing, locate the battery under the two small plastic lugs opposite the clip first, then press into place.

10. Can I adjust the tonal balance of Zeppelin?

The level of bass is affected by where you place Zeppelin. See the Adjusting the sound section of the Owners Manual for instructions on how to alter Zeppelin's bass to compensate.

11. My iPod's own volume control does not work when docked in Zeppelin.

This feature only operates on 5th generation iPods, nanos or later and only if the iPod is running later software. It does not work on a docked 3rd or 4th generation iPod or a mini. When adjusting the volume using the clickwheel or slider of an iPod/iPhone docked in Zeppelin, it is Zeppelin's own volume level that is adjusted and displayed on the iPod's screen. The iPod's internal volume setting is not changed, so the previous headphone level is restored as soon as the iPod is undocked.

Return to top of page

12. When changing Zeppelin's volume using its own controls or its remote control, the LED glows white when it is close to full volume and red at each end stop, but not when using the iPod's volume control.

This is normal behaviour. When controlling the volume level with the iPod, you are close enough to see the volume level displayed on the iPod's screen. The LED indication is provided for when you are using Zeppelin's remote handset and too far away to read the iPod's screen.

13. Why do some of the tracks do not seem to play as loudly as expected?

iPods have a feature called Sound Check that resets the average loudness of all tracks to be approximately the same. It's a useful feature if you use shuffle or have a mixed genre play list. If Sound Check is enabled, some tracks will be quieter than they were originally. From the iPod main menu, select Settings then Sound Check. Toggle this to Off to restore the original track volume levels.

Return to top of page

14. Can iPods older than those listed on Zeppelin's carton be used?

The shuffle and iPod models earlier than 3rd generation do not have the 30-pin connector used on current models, so they will not connect with Zeppelin's docking port. However, you can play them through Zeppelin by connecting their headphone output to the AUX input at the back of Zeppelin, just like any other second source. When using the headphone output, set the iPod's own volume to around 75% full scale.

Although a 3rd generation iPod will connect with Zeppelin's docking port, it will not charge through Zeppelin because it uses only the obsolete Firewire method and it is also incompatible with the latest Zeppelin software. With this model also, connect its headphone output to Zeppelins AUX input.

15. After docking my iPod in Zeppelin, it sometimes just shows the charging icon on its screen for a time.

There is no malfunction, but if you allow your iPod's battery to get extremely low - almost completely discharged - the iPod will need to recharge for a while before it operates properly. During that time it will only display the charging icon. Once the iPod is charged to the minimum level, normal operation will return.

16. Why does the backlight stay off when my iPod is docked in Zeppelin?

With the iPod docked in Zeppelin, navigate Speakers > Backlight and you can toggle through four options in turn. Make sure that Always Off is not selected.

Return to top of page

17. My iPod/iPhone's backlight keeps dimming when docked in Zeppelin.

Make sure you have the latest Zeppelin software installed.

Return to top of page

18. My iPod sometimes seems to display virtually a single colour all over.

This can sometimes happen when you configure large album art on a 5G or nano. It is not a bug as such, merely the way some artwork seems to display on the iPod and is not affected by whether or not it is docked in Zeppelin. If you wish to avoid this effect, you should disable large album art. Dock the iPod in Zeppelin to access the Speakers item in the main menu. Select Speakers, highlight Large Album Art and toggle it to Off.

19. Sometimes the remote control operates from further away than at other times. What is causing this?

The sensitivity of the infrared receiver on Zeppelin is highest directly in line so you will always get the greatest operating distance when you are directly in front. In addition, other factors will affect the infrared reception, such as sunlight and infrared radiation from flat panel TVs.

Return to top of page

20. Why can't I output album art, playlists or menu items to an external screen?

This is because iPods themselves will only output stored picture slideshows (jpegs) or videos.

Return to top of page

21. Why can't I get video to output to my TV?

For all non-touchscreen iPods, make sure that Video Out is enabled. From the iPod's main menu, navigate Videos > Video Settings, and then toggle TV Out to On. Also, make sure that TV Signal is set to the appropriate format for your territory.

For all touch and iPhone models, make sure you have the latest Zeppelin software installed.

22. Zeppelin does not wake up on docking an iPod when a USB cable is connected.

If a USB cable is connected to both Zeppelin and a computer and the mains power is turned off and on again (power recycle), Zeppelin enters a special mode ready to receive a software upgrade. Because of this, it will remain in standby when an iPod is docked rather than turn fully on as normal. In fact Zeppelin cannot be turned on for any normal operation at all in this state.

This condition does not happen if there has been no power recycle and it does not happen if the USB cable is plugged into Zeppelin only and not the computer.

To correct the situation, simply disconnect the USB cable from the computer. It is good practice to have the USB cable connected only when you want to install new software.

23. I cannot hear audio streamed from the Internet.

Make sure you have the latest Zeppelin software installed. If your Zeppelin serial number starts with Z-0, you will have to manually enable streaming. This is explained in the Streaming content from the Internet section of the online manual.

Return to top of page

24. When I press the play/pause or forward or back buttons on Zeppelin's remote while watching a movie on You Tube, it causes a return to iPod mode.

This is normal. The on-screen play/pause, forward and back buttons in You Tube have a different command set from the comparable buttons in iPod mode. Zeppelin's remote only duplicates the iPod mode commands, so pressing these will force a return to iPod mode. If play/pause is pressed, the current iPod track will start.

25. My 1st generation iPod classic is missing some functionality.

Early versions of the firmware of this model did not allow certain features to operate properly:

1. The extra Speakers item did not appear in the main menu when the iPod was docked in Zeppelin, preventing adjustment of the bass equalisation.
2. Zeppelin's volume was not displayed on the iPod's screen.
3. There were some problems outputting video.

These issues were resolved from iPod firmware version 1.0.3
